The Gesture Contained Recent Sculptures by Joshua Enck

The Gesture Contained features a dynamic assortment of sculptures, some over seven feet tall, which are created with diverse materials including poplar, ash, reclaimed pine, and Corten Steel. Enck’s background in architecture and as a furniture maker is evident in the meticulous craftsmanship and solid design sensibility reflected in each work. The artist’s free-standing compositions are endearingly quirky and often possess a pronounced asymmetry and light-hearted stance. While compositions may recall a vintage dress form, architectural elements or an over-sized plant bud, these sculptures also invite a range of associations. Enck employs techniques such as hand-painting, distressing with patina, welding and bent-laminating to create the unique constructions.

Joshua Enck received his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design and has been an instructor at RISD since 2005. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Sciences from the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois. Enck is a recipient of the 2011 Fellowship in Three-Dimensional Art from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts.
