Another Day, Another Way: Tim McFarlane

Another Day, Another Way features over 25 large and small-scale paintings by Philadelphia-based artist Tim McFarlane. The exhibition showcases various bodies of work that span from 2023 to the present. McFarlane is a fearless creator who continues to push the boundaries of materials and approaches in his creative practice.

In several works, McFarlane invites the viewer to consider the distinctions between painting and drawing. With the absence of color, one might argue that the layered webs of monochromatic lines, rendered in acrylic and spray paint, are akin to the practice of drawing. The layered forms in McFarlane’s boldly colored paintings from 2023 and 2024 are like stylized wire frame renderings of organic forms.

In McFarlane’s newest series, created in 2025-2026 and seen for the first time at The Zillman, the artist explores the intersection of painting and sculpture. Irregular-shaped fabric and unstretched canvas are vehicles for thickly applied acrylic paint that are, at times, combined with other materials such as acrylic markers and glitter. McFarlane states, “Besides the change in format, my application of paint leans more into a tactility that’s different than my more traditional painting style.” The artist’s scraped-on passages and paint buildup result in rich layers and textures that resemble geologic topography. McFarlane’s new series are experimentations in shapes and sizes, including works such as the horizontally dominant Right Here, An Inch Away From Heaven, that spans over eight feet wide.
